eTA vs Visitor Visa

Depending on your nationality, you may need either an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a Visitor Visa to enter Canada.

eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)

  • • Valid for 5 years or until passport expires

Common Visa/Permit Categories

Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)

  • • Short-term medical treatment

Study Permit

Required for most study programs longer than 6 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

  • • No criminal record (police certificate may be required)
  • • Medical exam (if required)
  • • Intent to leave Canada after studies

Work Permit

Employer-Specific:

  • • Usually requires LMIA
  • • Based on job offer

Open Work Permit:

  • • Work for any employer
  • • For specific situations (PGWP, spouse, etc.)
  • • No LMIA required
